This handcrafted kokeshi is the work of Niiyama Fukuo (新山福雄), master kijiya of the Yajirō-kei lineage.
The eldest son of Niiyama Fukutarō, he learned turning at a very young age in Yajirō village (Miyagi Prefecture) and began producing kokeshi before the war alongside his father. After returning from military service in 1947, he took over the family workshop and participated in the post-war boom of kokeshi, often in collaboration with his brothers. In the 1960s, Fukuo gained the esteem of collectors by elegantly reinterpreting the models of Fukutarō and Eigorō: broad, gentle faces, elongated temples, carefully drawn colored rings. He passed away in 1987, leaving behind a solid and respected body of work within the Yajirō school.
🦝 We like:
Its red kimono pattern, typical and very graphic, combined with the Janome pattern, these red and purple rings on the headdress. The three-volume silhouette with a cinched waist is particularly well-executed here. We love her gentle face with elongated temples and an almost "jaded" look, a distinctive trait of Fukuo!

By purchasing from Kogedo, you are helping to keep traditional Japanese crafts and culture alive.
