    The Artisan: Hachihoya Kunio 八甫谷 邦夫

    Hachihoya Kunio is a Japanese artisan associated with the Yajirō lineage, a large traditional family of kokeshi originating from the Miyagi region.

    His work is associated with the shingata (新型こけし) style, or "modern kokeshi", which appeared in post-war Japan when artisans began to revisit traditional forms. While retaining the turned wood technique and the fundamental codes of kokeshi, these pieces introduce bolder graphic compositions and a more contemporary aesthetic.

    Hachihoya Kunio's kokeshi notably feature:

    slender and well-turned silhouettes,
    a narrowed waist typical of certain Yajirō,
    soft faces with long, very recognizable nekobana 猫鼻 (cat nose) noses.

    Details

    The face is particularly endearing, with its delicate eyes, its very graphic pointed eyebrows and its long nekobana nose, which gives this kokeshi an expression that is both mischievous and tender.

    The body, made of varnished natural wood, is decorated with large, very well-executed red hishigiku motifs, stylized diamond-shaped chrysanthemums. These flowers bring a luminous and very Japanese presence to the whole.

    The silhouette is characteristic of the Yajirō style, with a round head, a defined neck, and then a body narrowed at the waist before widening towards the base.

    This kokeshi is signed under the base 甫作, a signature associated with Hachihoya Kunio.

    The presence of this signature enhances its interest for collectors of traditional Japanese kokeshi, especially those seeking pieces from the Yajirō lineage.
