This superb ancient maru obi (丸帯) is an exceptional piece, fully decorated on both sides, which testifies to its refinement and quality. Woven from brocade silk (絹織物 / kinu orimono), it features magnificent scenes of daily life of the imperial court aristocracy inspired by Heian period Japan, thus evoking the landscapes of emaki or ukiyo-e.

We can observe characters in kimonos, traditional gosho guruma carts, thatched-roof houses, all integrated into a seasonal landscape punctuated by chrysanthemums, maples, pines, and golden clouds. The composition blends nature and human life in a visual narrative of great delicacy.

The decoration is identical on the front and back, making it a true maru obi, ideal for display as a decorative object.

🧵 Note: This piece, with a narrative style close to Japanese painted scrolls or Japanese prints, is a textile tribute to the art of living of yesteryear. It will appeal to kimono enthusiasts and collectors of Japanese decorative art alike.
