    This traditional Japanese mask depicts Hyottoko (ひょっとこ), a comical character with a distorted face, blowing strangely through his mouth.

    It is hand-carved from solid wood, probably kusunoki (Japanese camphor wood), a prized material for sculpture. Every feature of his face — his round eyes, pursed mouth, prominent cheekbones — attests to true craftsmanship. The quality of the carving, the polished wood, and the rich grain make it a piece of great finesse. The back of the mask shows a rough but neat finish.

    Hyottoko is a figure from Japanese folklore: he embodies a fire blower, with a distorted mouth, sometimes associated with good luck or the spirit of the domestic fire. But his presence is not limited to popular dances or rural festivals. In Kyōgen theater, a traditional Japanese comic art performed alternately with Noh, Hyottoko comes to life as a burlesque, naive, exaggeratedly expressive character. This mask precisely evokes this theatrical use, with controlled and deliberately grotesque expressiveness, faithful to the aesthetic of Kyōgen.

    Also present in pop culture, Hyottoko was recently honored in the Demon Slayer manga and anime, where blacksmiths wear masks of this type!

    A piece as expressive as it is warm, at the crossroads of theater and Japanese popular art.

    We really like Hyottoko's comic expression, and it's quite rare to find a Hyottoko mask carved from wood rather than made of papier-mâché. It's not just a folk object: it's a fragment of theater, an ancestral comic figure frozen in wood.
