👩 The Ko-omote character: idealized youth

The character of Ko-omote (小面), literally "young female face," is one of the most iconic masks of Noh theater. It represents a young noblewoman of pure, gentle, and discreet beauty. Its expression is designed to embody youthful grace, restraint, modesty, but also a form of poetic melancholy.

In the Noh tradition, Ko-omote is often used to embody young female spirits, princesses, or deceased lovers, expressing ephemerality and refinement.

Realism and refinement of Keigo's work

This mask signed Keigo (圭冶) is carved with great finesse, in accordance with the tradition of men-ushi (Noh mask carvers). It showcases a particularly remarkable surface treatment: a matte, lightly polished gofun (生胡粉 / nama gofun) with a subtle and grainy texture, surprisingly evoking the real texture of human skin. Unlike glossy lacquer masks, this one gently captures light.

Gofun, a traditional mixture of oyster shell powder and animal glue, gives the surface a matte, slightly grainy appearance, subtly imitating the natural texture of human skin.

The shade is not pure white but a very soft cream beige, nuanced and organic, contributing to the disturbing realism of the face.

    🔍 Flaws and authenticity

    • Old cracks are visible under the chin in the coating, without weakening the wood structure.
    • Some wear of the black pigment is present on the top of the painted hairstyle.
    • No visible signs of wear on the face.

    🦝 Our opinion

This Ko-omote mask signed Keigo is a true work of art, a far cry from standard decorative objects. Its matte gofun finish, its subtle palette, and its both lively and gentle expression make it a beautiful example of authentic Shōwa era Japanese Noh craftsmanship.

Perfect for a collector, a Japanese theater enthusiast, or a photographer/artist in search of realistic expressiveness.
