The character of Kōshi-jō in Noh
This traditional Japanese mask represents Kōshi-jō (小牛尉), also called Ko-jō, a Noh theater character belonging to the Jō-men family.
In Noh theater, the Kōshi-jō mask is used to portray old men who are actually manifestations of deities, particularly in plays known as waki-nō such as Takasago or Yōrō.
These characters symbolize wisdom, longevity, and natural order.
Carving and Expression
This mask features a contained and dignified expression, characteristic of Kōshi-jō: half-closed eyes, finely carved wrinkles, soberly painted mustache, and an implanted natural horsehair beard.
The slightly open mouth, revealing only the upper teeth, is typical of this type of mask. Depending on the tilt and light, the face seems to oscillate between severity and benevolence.
The interior of the mask is rough and hand-worked, revealing the wood's patina and an engraved seal, a sign of Japanese workshop craftsmanship.
🦝 Our opinion
A true, ancient, and authentic Noh theater mask, not a modern decorative production.
The high-quality carving makes its expression extremely realistic, and the natural patina makes the face even more lifelike, impressive! It's a collector's item, ideal for Japanese art enthusiasts or discerning collectors.
