    Description

    This Japanese oshi-e 押絵 painting depicts a kabuki theater actor, recognizable by his expressive makeup and long white hair, typical of certain dramatic roles in the kabuki repertoire.

    The composition plays on a marked textile relief, giving depth and presence to the work. The actor's costume consists of richly decorated textiles, mixing geometric patterns and colorful brocades. The contrasts between the reds, gold, and blues recall the exuberance of the costumes worn on stage in kabuki theater.

    The white hair, made with long, light fibers, adds movement to the whole and enhances the spectacular aspect of the scene.

    On the back of the painting is a Japanese signature 青木 (Aoki), probably that of the craftsman or workshop that made this piece.

    The oshi-e technique

    Oshi-e 押絵 is a Japanese craft technique that involves creating relief images from textiles. Elements are cut from fabric—often silk—then lightly padded before being attached to a rigid support.

    This method allows playing with volumes, textures, and colors, giving the depicted figures a very particular presence.

    During the Shōwa period, this decorative technique was widely used to represent emblematic figures of Japanese culture, notably kabuki actors, traditional beauties, or scenes inspired by Japanese folklore.
