    Description

This Hagi-yaki guinomi was made by Kaneko Nobuhiko (金子信彦), a Hagi ceramist, in his kiln Jōzan-gama (城山窯).

The blue-gray glaze varies between pale blue, deep gray, milky white, and brown, with rougher areas where the clay appears. Each viewing angle reveals a different aspect, almost as if several guinomi were combined into a single piece.

The shape remains intentionally rustic: an irregular rim, a thick body, and a very rough foot. This older, less refined appearance compared to his recent productions gives the piece a lot of character.

Under the base, Kaneko Nobuhiko's circular seal, Jōzan (城山), is visible. The guinomi comes with its original tomobako, which is calligraphed 松籟庵 城山造 — Shōraian, made by Jōzan, as well as the inscriptions ぐい呑 — guinomi and Hagi-yaki 萩焼.

Based on the style and the inscription on the box, this guinomi is estimated to be from the 1970s-80s.

    About the artisan: Kaneko Nobuhiko

Kaneko Nobuhiko (金子信彦) was born in Hagi in 1951. He joined Jōzan-gama (城山窯, "Jōzan kiln") in 1969, at just 18 years old, and developed his work there around the tradition of Hagi-yaki (萩焼). He quickly gained recognition and won his first awards from Yamaguchi Prefecture in the 80s. He gradually took over as master of the Jōzan kiln, which he still directs today. Kaneko Nobuhiko has received several important awards, including the Grand Prix of the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition in 2004 and the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition in 2007.

Throughout his career, he also used the potter and studio names Watanabe Jōzan (渡辺城山) and Shōraian (松籟庵). His seal, however, remains unchanged.

    🦝 Our opinion

A raw, lively, and very original Hagi guinomi! We love its changing glaze, its rustic foot, and the impression of having a different piece depending on the angle from which you look at it!

A beautiful old piece by Kaneko Nobuhiko, with its original tomobako, perfect for sake or for a collection of Japanese ceramics.
