    Description

    Beautiful ancient Japanese Ko-Imari 古伊万里 porcelain teacup, produced in the Arita workshops of the former Hizen Province.

    An ancient piece estimated to date from the Edo period, between the 18th and mid-19th century. Its hand-painted decoration combines the refinement of iro-e porcelains (with colored enamels) in the traditional Kakiemon style with red and gold elements foreshadowing the more opulent aesthetic of the Kinrande style.

    Its fine and balanced shape evokes a small Japanese cup intended for table service.

    The exterior decoration illustrates a mountain and water landscape: sansui 山水図, with a large matsu pine 松, a pavilion by the water, and stylized mountains and vegetation. The scene alternates with areas adorned with seigaiha 青海波 waves and red panels decorated with karakusa 唐草 arabesques enhanced with gold powder.

    The color palette and refined appearance evoke Arita porcelains in the Kakiemon style: iron red, blue, green, yellow, and purple in overglaze enamels, without underglaze blue. On the other hand, the gold touches placed on the red enamel areas evoke the Kinrande 金襴手 Imari style.

    The reverse is unmarked. The granular foot retains traces of sand and firing consistent with ancient manufacturing.

    A beautiful Edo period Japanese porcelain, delicate, with very beautiful sansui motifs!
    We particularly like its balance between the elegance of the refined Kakiemon style and the richness of the seigaiha waves and gilded Kinrande arabesques, which demonstrate the decorative evolutions of Arita.
