    Description

    This Hagi-yaki sake cup, Ochoko, was made by Yoshiga Taiga (吉賀大雅), an active potter at the Senryūzan kiln in Hagi. He is the son of Yoshiga Taibi (吉賀大眉), a renowned master of Hagi-yaki.

    The Senryūzan kiln is in the tradition of Hagi kilns, whose history dates back to the Edo period, when Hagi ceramics were closely linked to the tea ceremony and the taste of the daimyō of the region: the Mōri clan.

    The clay used is a light, chamotte Hagi clay, intentionally under-vitrified. The pale glaze reveals fine natural crackle (kan-nyū), characteristic of Hagi-yaki, which will subtly evolve with time and sake use.

    The form is simple and balanced: an ochoko without excessive decorative flourishes, in a wabi-sabi style.

    Under the base, the 吉賀大雅 seal is visible. The ochoko comes with its original tomobako, bearing calligraphy and the red seal of Yoshika Taiga.

    A true Hagi ochoko, pure tradition.
    The lineage with Yoshiga Taibi, the typical light chamotte Hagi clay, and the presence of the tomobako with its document make it a very beautiful piece.
