    This print depicts one of the most popular episodes of the classic kabuki repertoire: the legend of the Soga brothers, Soga Jūrō and Soga Gorō, seeking to avenge the assassination of their father, killed by Kudō Suketsune.

    In this scene called taimen no ba (the confrontation), the two brothers meet Kudō Suketsune for the first time, and the dramatic intensity is at its peak. Kudō, depicted here with authority, holds a fox mask (kitsune-men) in his hand.

    The Soga are depicted kneeling, in richly decorated garments with butterflies, birds, waves, and flowers, symbols of nobility and ephemerality – a reminder that their quest for revenge will lead to their own deaths.

    Despite some age-related flaws, this piece remains magnificent and offers a beautiful synthesis of kabuki art in print.
