The Japanese kimono, traditional garment and living heritage

The Japanese kimono is the emblematic garment of Japan. Long worn daily, it gradually gave way to Western clothing from the late 19th century onwards, but remains a major cultural symbol today. Each kimono expresses something: a season, a social status, a particular event.

    The haori is a traditional kimono jacket worn open, fastened only by two small cords called haori himo. Unlike a full kimono, it does not cross over in the front.

    • Iromuji: plain kimono, worn in semi-formal contexts.
    • Furisode: long, colorful sleeves, reserved for young single women.
    • Homongi and Tomesode: more formal kimono, used for ceremonies.
