The Japanese kimono, traditional garment and living heritage
The Japanese kimono is the emblematic garment of Japan. Long worn daily, it gradually gave way to Western clothing from the late 19th century onwards, but remains a major cultural symbol today. Each kimono expresses something: a season, a social status, a particular event.
At KOGEDO, we exclusively offer vintage kimonos: antique pieces selected directly in Japan, chosen for the quality of their fabrics, the richness of their patterns, and their authenticity. Haori, komon, yukata, obi... each garment tells a story and allows a unique craft to be brought back to life.

Haori – The Traditional Japanese Jacket
A practical and elegant garment
The haori is a traditional kimono jacket worn open, fastened only by two small cords called haori himo. Unlike a full kimono, it does not cross over in the front.
A decidedly modern jacket
Easy to wear on its own, over a Western outfit, the haori is the ideal gateway to discover the kimono in modern life. Our vintage Japanese haori are selected for their decorated linings, old fabrics, and authentic patterns.
-
The main types of kimono
Kimono by season
- Hitoe: unlined kimono, worn in spring and summer.
- Awase: lined kimono, suitable for autumn and winter.
Kimono by use
- Komon: repeated patterns, everyday use.
- Iromuji: plain kimono, worn in semi-formal contexts.
- Furisode: long, colorful sleeves, reserved for young single women.
- Homongi and Tomesode: more formal kimono, used for ceremonies.
Each type of kimono follows specific codes, but all share the same attention to fabrics and respect for artisanal traditions.
-
Obi – Belts and Textile Masterpieces
Everyday Obi
- Hanhaba obi: simple and lightweight, used for yukata.
- Nagoya obi: elegant and practical, easy to tie for daily wear.
Formal and Luxurious Obi
- Fukuro obi: wide and refined, suitable for ceremonies.
- Maru obi: the most prestigious, fully embroidered with silk, considered a true textile work of art.
Obi as Decoration
Today, vintage obi also find new life outside of clothing: wall hangings, table runners, or decorative textile objects. A contemporary way to showcase these unique pieces.
