Japanese woodblock print: tradition and authenticity
Japanese printmaking, or ukiyo-e, is a woodblock print that originated in the Edo period (1603–1868). Hand-carved and printed, it captures the beauty of ancient Japan: landscapes of Mount Fuji, bustling Tōkaidō roads, portraits of kabuki actors, or scenes of daily life. It remains one of the great witnesses to Japanese culture.
Over time, styles have evolved: the golden age of ukiyo-e in Edo, Western influences in the Meiji era, then the revival of shin-hanga and reissues by masters in the Shōwa period. These different periods today offer a rich choice between ancient original prints and authentic 20th-century reissues.
At KOGEDO, we directly select original prints and Shōwa reissues from Japan. Our goal is simple: to offer verified, authentic, and accessible pieces, allowing everyone to discover or collect this unique art.
