Japanese tableware: tradition and daily use

Japanese tableware plays a central role in Japanese culture. Bowls, porcelains, lacquers, and objects related to tea and sake are designed to accompany daily activities as well as ritualistic moments. Each piece reflects a balance between functionality, aesthetics, and a sense of time.

Since the Edo period (1603–1868), Japanese artisans have developed distinct regional styles, adapted to various uses: drinking tea, serving rice, or presenting a meal. The Meiji era (1868–1912) brought a new refinement, particularly in porcelains, while preserving traditional craftsmanship.

Today, antique Japanese tableware is captivating due to its authenticity and timelessness. At KOGEDO, we directly select objects in Japan for their history, their artisanal quality, and their ability to be used daily.

  • Chawan: Japanese Tea Bowls

The chawan is the bowl used for drinking matcha tea during the tea ceremony. A central object in the ritual, it is chosen for its shape, texture, and the flavor it imparts to the tea.

    Major Chawan Styles

Raku (free forms, wabi-sabi spirit), Shino and Oribe (Mino, light or green glazes), Bizen and Shigaraki (unglazed, wood-fired), Hagi (soft clay, crackles), Kyō-yaki (refined), Kutani (more decorative).

Each chawan reflects a tea school and a regional aesthetic.

  • Ancient Japanese Porcelains

Japanese porcelain first appeared in the 17th century and developed significantly during the Edo and Meiji periods, both for daily use and for export. It is distinguished by its delicacy, strength, and rich ornamentation.

    Emblematic kilns and styles

Arita (blue and white, then polychrome), Imari (red and gold decorations), Nabeshima (refined production for the elite), Kutani (vivid enamels and painted scenes), Hirado (very fine white porcelain). These styles bear witness to the excellence of Japanese workshops.

  • Traditional Japanese Lacquerware

Japanese lacquer, or urushi, has been used for centuries for tableware and tea ceremony items. Applied in successive layers, it protects the object while giving it a unique depth.

    Renowned Objects and Regions

Soup bowls, trays, boxes, and natsume for tea. The regions of Wajima (robustness), Aizu (everyday use), and Kyoto (refined sobriety) are particularly recognized for the quality of their lacquerware.
